Scottish singer-songwriter whose rich voice, guitar-led songs and global hit This Is the Life (2007) have made her a timeless voice in UK folk-rock.
Amy Macdonald is a Scottish singer-songwriter whose powerful voice and acoustic-driven rock/folk sound have earned her a place among the UK’s most enduring musical voices. Born on 25 August 1987 in Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow, she taught herself guitar after being inspired by Travis at a festival, and began performing locally while still a teenager. Her debut album This Is the Life (2007) became a breakout success — most notably with singles like “Mr. Rock & Roll” and the title track “This Is the Life”, which charted at number one in several countries and helped the album sell millions of copies worldwide.
Over subsequent albums — including A Curious Thing (2010), Life in a Beautiful Light (2012), Under Stars (2017), The Human Demands (2020) and Is This What You’ve Been Waiting For? (2025) — Macdonald has developed a sound that blends folk, indie-rock and melodic pop, always anchored by her distinct voice and straightforward songwriting. Known for her engaging live performances and deep connection with audiences, she remains rooted in her Scottish identity and continues to reach fans across Europe and beyond.
