Tindersticks are an alternative-indie rock band that formed in Nottingham 1992, renowned for their cinematic, melancholic sound.
The band, fronted by Stuart A. Staples, take their name from a box of German matches and produce music that is characterised by lush orchestral arrangements and moody, slow-tempo compositions, that are coupled with the smoky, baritone vocals of Staples. Drawing comparisons to the dark, romantic sound of the likes of Leonard Cohen and Nick Cave, Tindersticks' highly-emotive style sets them apart from many typical 90s British rock bands.
Their debut, self-titled album was released in 1993 and was praised for its sprawling, ambitious sound. Following the 2006 departures of several members of the band, Tindersticks restructured and released The Hungry Saw in 2008 and The Something Rain in 2012, both also to critical acclaim.
Their career has been marked by a steadfast focus on artistic depth over commercial mainstream success, which has earned them a cult following in both the UK and across Europe.
