The Woodentops are a British rock band that formed in 1983 in South London. Initially, the lineup included Rolo McGinty (vocals, guitar), Simon Mawby (guitar), Alice Thompson (keyboards), Frank DeFreitas (bass guitar), and Benny Staples (drums). They gained early recognition with their debut single "Plenty" on Food Records in 1984, which received a glowing review from Morrissey in Melody Maker. Following this success, they signed with Rough Trade Records and released a series of singles in 1985, culminating in their debut album Giant in 1986. The album reached No. 35 on the UK Albums Chart and featured a blend of acoustic guitars, accordion, marimba, strings, and trumpet sounds.
The band continued to evolve their sound, incorporating more electronic elements and a frenetic live energy. Their second album, Wooden Foot Cops on the Highway (1988), showcased this shift and included tracks like "Stop This Car" and "Wheels Turning," which became dancefloor favourites. After a hiatus in the 1990s, The Woodentops returned to live performances in 2006 and released new material, including Granular Tales in 2014 and Fruits of the Deep in 2024. The current lineup consists of Rolo McGinty, Simon Mawby, Aine O'Keeffe, Frank de Freitas, and Paul Ashby.
