Kilsyth-born Scottish band whose brooding, guitar-led landscapes and heartfelt lyricism have secured them a respected place in modern British indie-rock.
The Twilight Sad are a Scottish post-punk/indie rock band hailing from Kilsyth, Lanarkshire. Formed in 2003, the group is fronted by vocalist James Graham alongside guitarist/producer Andy MacFarlane, with Johnny Docherty on bass, Brendan Smith on keyboards and Grant Hutchison on drums. Their debut album Fourteen Autumns & Fifteen Winters (2007) made waves with its emotional intensity, dense guitar walls and unmistakable Scottish accent in the vocals.
Since then, the band have evolved both sonically and thematically. On Forget the Night Ahead (2009) they pursued a darker, more streamlined sound, and with No One Can Ever Know (2012) they incorporated industrial and krautrock influences to great effect. Their fourth album Nobody Wants to Be Here and Nobody Wants to Leave (2014) consolidated their reputation for raw power in the live arena, while It Won’t Be Like This All the Time (2019) saw them reaching new creative heights and broader recognition. Touring the UK and Europe, they’ve built a devoted following with powerful, immersive shows — known for their “wall of noise” live sound and emotional impact.
