Swedish pop-rock band whose journey from small-town beginnings led to global success through timeless hits, constant reinvention and enduring international appeal.
The Cardigans formed in 1992 after five teenagers met in Jönköping, a small Swedish town better known for its fifty-two churches than its music scene. United by a shared love of hard rock, guitarist Peter Svensson and bassist Magnus Sveningsson laid the foundations of the band before the group relocated to Malmö to pursue their ambitions. With Svensson writing most of the music and lyrics shaped collectively, The Cardigans quickly gained attention, signing to Stockholm Records after an early release of “Rise & Shine.” Their debut album Emmerdale (1994) earned widespread acclaim in Sweden, followed by Life (1995), which delivered their first international success through singles including “Carnival” and a re-recorded “Rise & Shine.”
Global breakthrough arrived with First Band On The Moon (1996) and the single “Lovefool,” whose inclusion on the Romeo & Juliet soundtrack in 1997 propelled the band to international superstardom. Subsequent albums Gran Turismo (1998), Long Gone Before Daylight (2003) and Super Extra Gravity (2005) showcased a band constantly evolving, from electronic-leaning pop to darker, more unpredictable sounds. After solo projects and a period away from recording, The Cardigans returned to live performance in 2012 and have continued touring worldwide, celebrating their catalogue while revisiting key eras of their career.
