Suede are one of the most influential bands in Brit-pop history.
During the 90s, when the margins for Brit-pop expanded to accompany the demand and desire for boisterous hooks and loud guitars, Suede redefined the sound of British rock with a glamorous swagger and poetic melancholy that eventually made them pioneers of the Britpop era, even though they stood apart from it. Fronted by the charismatic and enigmatic Brett Anderson, with guitarist Bernard Butler providing searing, cinematic guitar work, Suede’s early sound married glam rock influences with emotional intensity and social realism.
Their self-titled debut album Suede (1993) became the fastest-selling debut in UK history at the time, winning the prestigious Mercury Music Prize and ushering in a wave of British guitar bands. Follow-up albums like Dog Man Star (1994), a dark and ambitious masterpiece, and Coming Up (1996), a glittering, pop-savvy reinvention, cemented their place as one of the UK's most iconic and influential bands.
