About Shabaka

Shabaka is a visionary British-Barbadian musician, composer and multi-instrumentalist whose work has reshaped the landscape of contemporary jazz. Best known for his mastery of the saxophone and woodwind instruments, he first rose to international prominence helming acclaimed projects such as Sons of Kemet, The Comet Is Coming and Shabaka and the Ancestors. Across these groups he blended spiritual jazz, Afro-Caribbean rhythms, avant-garde experimentation and political urgency, building a sound that felt both ancient and futuristic. Shabaka’s music has become renowned for its transcendental energy, emotional depth and a spiritual focus that resonates far beyond genre.

In recent years, Shabaka has entered a powerful new chapter, moving away from the saxophone to explore flutes, clarinets and other ancestral instruments, expanding his sound into meditative, ambient and ritual-led territory. His debut solo album under the single name Shabaka, Perceive Its Beauty, Acknowledge Its Grace (2024), marked a serene and exploratory shift — a record rooted in stillness, healing and a deeper connection to breath and space.
