Rachel Chinouriri grew up in Croydon, South London, in a family of Zimbabwean heritage, and trained at the BRIT School. She built her name through the late 2010s, earning early attention with her debut EP Mama's Boy (2019) before signing to Parlophone. The mini-album Four° In Winter (2021) and the EP Better Off Without (2022) shaped the honest, vulnerable songwriting that runs through her indie-pop sound.
Her debut studio album What a Devastating Turn of Events (2024) reached the UK Top 20 and brought two BRIT Award nominations, for Artist of the Year and Best New Artist, following earlier recognition from the Ivor Novello Awards and the BBC Sound Of poll. Singles including "The Hills", "Never Need Me" and "All I Ever Asked" won her a devoted fanbase, with Florence Pugh appearing in the "Never Need Me" video. On stage she has played Glastonbury's Other Stage and festival sets at Governors Ball and Bonnaroo, supported Sabrina Carpenter and Florence + The Machine on their arena tours, and shared the bill with Wolf Alice at London's Finsbury Park.
