Poppy Ackroyd is a British composer, pianist and violinist, and a regular member of Joe Acheson’s live project Hidden Orchestra. Known for her non-conformist approach to sound, she creates richly textured compositions by manipulating and multi-tracking violin and piano, the two instruments she has studied since childhood. Classically trained and holding a master’s degree in piano performance from the University of Edinburgh, Ackroyd has developed a distinctive style that feels both intricate and emotionally direct.
Her debut album Escapement (2012) introduced her delicate yet rhythmically driven soundworld, later followed by Feathers (2014), which expanded her palette with additional keyboard and string textures. In 2017 she signed to One Little Independent Records and released Sketches, an acoustic solo piano collection featuring reworkings of earlier material alongside new compositions. Her album Resolve marked a new chapter, incorporating guest musicians including Manu Delago, Jo Quail and Mike Lesirge. Throughout her work, Ackroyd continues to blur the line between classical precision and experimental exploration, crafting music that is intimate, immersive and quietly powerful.
