UK-based large-scale musical collective whose genre-spanning grooves unite jazz, soul and afro-rhythms in vivid, high-energy performances.
Nubiyan Twist are a vibrant nine-piece collective rooted in Leeds who now base themselves in London, known for their electrifying fusion of jazz, hip-hop, afrobeat, Latin, soul, reggae and dance music. Formed in 2011 at Leeds College of Music, the band is led by guitarist-producer Tom Excell and features an international rhythm section, a powerful horn section and vocals from the likes of Nubiya Brandon.
Their self-titled debut Nubiyan Twist (2015) marked their arrival with critical acclaim, praised for its tight musicianship and dance-floor energy. In 2021 they released Freedom Fables, a record celebrated for its blend of big-band horns, global grooves and socially conscious lyrics. Live, Nubiyan Twist have lit up major UK festivals such as Glastonbury Festival and Green Man Festival, supported legends like Tony Allen and Ebo Taylor, and established a reputation for exhilarating, groove-driven shows.
