Psychedelic rock band famed for fusing Indian musical and spiritual influences with bold, guitar-driven British rock.
Kula Shaker are a psychedelic rock band whose sound blends brash western rock and roll with deep influences drawn from Indian music, spirituality and philosophy. Formed around the vision of frontman Crispian Mills, the band are known for incorporating Sanskrit lyrics alongside distorted guitars, driving drums and traditional instruments such as sitar, tabla and tambura. This fusion helped set them apart within British rock, pairing spiritual themes with high-energy songwriting and a distinctly colourful aesthetic.
They first gained widespread attention with a run of hit singles including “Govinda”, “Hush”, “Tattva”, “Hey Dude” and “Sound of Drums”, songs that showcased both their melodic strength and cross-cultural ambition. The band’s origins trace back to Mills’ backpacking journey through India, where his interest in Hindu culture took shape before returning to the UK to form The Kays, who made their debut at Glastonbury Festival in 1993. As that vision evolved, the group adopted the name Kula Shaker, inspired by the eighth-century Indian emperor King Kulasekhara, a symbol of the spiritual and musical path they sought to follow.
