Few artists have shaped the sound of popular music quite like Herb Alpert. The trumpeter broke through in 1962 with “The Lonely Bull” and, alongside the Tijuana Brass, turned his warm, brass-led style into one of the defining sounds of the 1960s. The album Whipped Cream & Other Delights (1965) topped the US charts and, at its height, outsold even the Beatles, powering favourites such as “Spanish Flea”, “A Taste of Honey” and “Tijuana Taxi”. Alpert also landed number-one singles of his own with the vocal “This Guy’s in Love With You” and the smooth instrumental “Rise”.
Beyond the stage, Alpert co-founded A&M Records with Jerry Moss, building one of music’s great independent labels and a home to The Carpenters, The Police and Janet Jackson. He has sold more than 72 million records, earned 15 gold and 14 platinum albums, a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and a place in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, and keeps creating, releasing his 50th studio album, 50 (2024). He is also a celebrated abstract painter and sculptor.
