Matthew Barnes’ electronic project, blending immersive soundscapes with experimental music and multimedia artistry.
Forest Swords is the electronic project of Liverpool-based producer and artist Matthew Barnes, known for transforming sounds into immersive, innovative electronic worlds. Since debuting with Engravings (2013) and following up with Compassion (2017), Barnes has continued to push boundaries with his critically acclaimed third album Bolted (Ninja Tune, 2023). His work extends beyond solo releases, including remixes for artists such as Björk and Neneh Cherry, as well as curating a release in the iconic DJ-Kicks compilation series, cementing his reputation as a forward-thinking and adventurous electronic artist.
In recent years, Barnes has also expanded into film scoring and sound art. He composed the music for the Sundance award-winning Netflix documentary Ghosts of Sugar Land, the acclaimed Xbox video game As Dusk Falls, independent films Dogwatch and Stephen, and contributed to projects for the Norwegian National Ballet, Shanghai Biennale, and BFI London Film Festival. Combining cinematic atmospheres with experimental electronic textures, Forest Swords continues to captivate audiences across albums, live shows, and multidisciplinary art projects worldwide.
