Ethel Cain is the music persona of Hayden Silas Anhedönia — a singer, songwriter, producer and storyteller whose work unfolds as a haunting Southern Gothic saga. Raised in Florida, she experimented with various monikers early on before settling into her identity as Ethel Cain, a character whose narrative merges faith, trauma and identity with ambient, folk, Americana and dark pop textures. Her music often feels cinematic — raw, personal and expansive all at once.
Her debut full-length Preacher’s Daughter (2022) introduced listeners to a tragic, deeply emotional world — exploring themes of religious strictness, abuse and redemption — and quickly earned her critical acclaim and a devoted fan base. In 2025 she released Perverts, a bold, experimental project rooted in drone, ambient and slowcore that pushed her sonic boundaries. Later that same year she returned with Willoughby Tucker, I’ll Always Love You (2025), described as a lyrical prequel to her debut and marking a thematic shift while tying her narrative threads together. She has also indicated that Willoughby Tucker will close the chapter on the Ethel Cain persona, enabling her to explore new artistic directions going forward.
