Founded in the Netherlands in the early 2000s by guitarist Mark Jansen, EPICA quickly grew into one of symphonic metal's defining bands. Their sound pairs the soaring soprano of vocalist Simone Simons with heavy riffs and Jansen's death growls, all wrapped in sweeping orchestral arrangements and operatic choirs. From their debut The Phantom Agony(2003) onwards, the six-piece have released a run of ambitious, cinematic albums including Design Your Universe (2009), The Quantum Enigma (2014) and Omega (2021), building a devoted following around the world.
More than two decades on, EPICA remain renowned for the sheer scale of their live shows. The band have taken their music to even grander heights with full orchestra-and-choir spectacles such as The Symphonic Synergy, performances that turn their layered, philosophical songwriting into something genuinely monumental. For fans of heavy music with real cinematic ambition, few bands deliver a bigger sense of occasion.
