About De Staat

De Staat are a Dutch experimental alternative-rock outfit that blend genres and defy characterisation. 

Fronted by the charismatic Torre Florim, De Staat (meaning 'The State' in English) formed in 2006 in Nijmegen, The Netherlands. Their debut album, Wait for Evolution arrived in 2009, and initially was recorded alone as part of Florim's graduation project for a music production course. This then developed into a full band endeavour due to popular demand. Within a year of its release, De Staat were performing at festivals such as Dot to Dot, Glastonbury, and Sziget, and building a reputation for being one of Europe's most inventive and fearless live acts, re-defining what it means to be a rock band with a uniquely visual stage language. De Staat have also toured with The Rolling Stones, Muse, and Biffy Clyro.

The band's third album I_CON was released in 2013, and is their most commercially successful album to date, reaching number 2 in the Dutch album charts and with "Down Town" featuring on the FIFA 14 game soundtrack. "Witch Doctor" has become a cult favourite with fans of De Staat, with live performances including the famous circle pit with Florim performing in the centre, as a recreation of the music video where Florim is surrounded by thousands of animated men running around him in a circle. 

De Staat's sound has evolved over the years, from heavy, desert-rock influenced riffs to an eclectic, disco style, containing industrial grooves, experimental electronics with pop sensibilities. The artistic rock approach with funk-infused rhythms and danceable beats have made De Staat an iconic name in the alternative scene.
