Charles Berthoud is a British bassist who has quietly rewritten the rulebook for what the electric bass can do. A master of two-handed tapping, he plays melody, harmony and rhythm all at once, using the bass much as a pianist uses both hands, and folding in fast, almost flamenco-like runs along the way. Drawing freely on rock, jazz and classical influences, his playing slips between styles with a warmth and musicality that has won him fans far beyond the usual bass crowd.
His grounding is serious: he graduated from Berklee College of Music with the highest honours, where he co-authored the instructional book Two-Handed Tapping with his mentor Jim Stinnett. That expertise now reaches players worldwide through his BassCamp courses and online community, and it earned him his own signature instrument, the Schecter CB-4. Equal parts virtuoso and genuine communicator, Charles has built an international touring career on the back of it, and live he is a real treat: one musician, one bass, and a sound far bigger than either should allow.
