Band of Friends was founded in 2012 by legendary bassist Gerry McAvoy—Rory Gallagher's long-standing collaborator from 1971 to 1991—as a living celebration of Rory’s music rather than a mere tribute. Originally formed with drummer Ted McKenna (Rory’s drummer from 1977 to 1981) and guitarist Marcel Scherpenzeel, the group breathed new life into Gallagher’s electrifying blues-rock catalogue. They made their recording mark with Too Much Is Not Enough (2013), followed by the live album Live ’n’ Kickin (2015), and the second studio album Repeat After Me (2016).
Since then, Band of Friends has continued to tour relentlessly—led first by Brendan O’Neill (Gallagher’s drummer from 1981 to 1991), alongside guitarists Paul Rose (picked by Rory from among a thousand hopefuls) and Jim Kirkpatrick (of FM fame). Known for their soul-searing performances and deep authenticity, they’ve become a global force, commanding stages across festivals and clubs while carrying Rory’s spirit forward with relentless passion.
