Independent Venue Week is almost here! The annual seven-day celebration shines a spotlight on independently run arts and music venues plus the hardworking people serving their communities.

IVW takes place between Monday 29th January and Sunday 4th February 2024 – CLICK HERE to find a show near you.

The Crescent

York’s independent DIY venue

The Crescent community venue is a former working men’s club in York which has been popular with locals for over a century. Now a live music venue, it has forged a reputation for picking key breakthrough bands and cutting-edge acts on their rise to the top.

IVW shows include headline performances from English Teacher (Sunday 28th January), Steve Mason (Tuesday 30th January), Vittorio Angelone (Wednesday 31st January), Personal Trainer (Thursday 1st February) and John Kearns: The Varnishing Days (Sunday 4th February).

The Polar Bear

HU5 ‘til I die

The grassroots music community of Hull is second to none and The Polar Bear can be found right in the centre of the vibrant HU5 district, packed full of welcoming bars, venues and restaurants.

Built in 1895, the pub has a magnificent ceramic-fronted counter and has a striking design reflecting the confidence of predominantly working-class city in boom following the industrial revolution. It’s now famed for its expert selection of live music acts, wild club nights and the home of the deadly Hull Slammer.

The coming weeks sees performances from The Clockworks (Monday 29th January), Chappaqua Wrestling (Wednesday 31st January), English Teacher (Thursday 1st February) and Steve Mason (Saturday 3rd February).

Brudenell Social Club

Get to the Brude!

Brudenell Social Club is Leeds’ most beloved venue. Staying true to its working men’s club roots but embracing the trendy LS6 vibes, the Brude is the top destination for such indie greats as Franz Ferdinand plus local boys Kaiser Chiefs and The Cribs.

The coming celebrations see appearances from Canadian Americana and folk songwriter Allison Russell on The Returner Tour (Monday 29th January) and Margaret Glaspy showing off latest album Echo the Diamond (Wednesday 31st January).

The Fulford Arms

The historic Yorkshire pub hosting cutting edge bands 

Grassroots gig spot The Fulford Arms boasts a large beer garden in addition to its 150-capacity stage and is run by landlord Chris Tuke. The York pub was first established way back in 1801, adopting the now familiar name in 1976.

Independent Venue Week sees performances from raw Irish upstarts NewDad (Wednesday 31st January) and the riotous Chappaqua Wrestling (Thursday 1st February).

Hull Social

The very best ex-warehouse parties in the North!

Found on the revitalised Humber Street, Hull Social is a 300-capacity former fruit warehouse located at the northeastern port town’s docks. The cool club is perfectly placed for the annual Humber Street Sesh festival and hosts stand-up comedy in addition to live music and club nights.

Rock supergroup Dead Men Walking includes Mike Peters of the Alarm and Kirk Brandon from Spear of Destiny. They play on Hull Social Thursday 1st February.

The Terrace

The small venue going big on atmosphere

Former small pub The Terrace is the perfect place to enjoy an intimate live music experience with a capacity of just 100. Now a popular West Yorkshire gig spot for the people of Dewsbury, expect everything from R&B to drum and bass, indie bands, and jazz groups.

The Key Club

Your gateway to the best in hardcore shows

Leeds alt rock and metal venue The Key Club opened in 2014 and hosts hundreds of gigs and club nights every year. They have previously seen performances from such greats as IDLES, Cancer Bats, Don Broco, Beartooth, You Me At Six, Frank Carter & The Rattlesnakes and The Bronx.

See 2023 Heavy Metal Award-winning metalcore band As December Falls smash it at The Key Club on Friday 2nd February.

Northern Quarter

The perfect place for music lovers

Independent live music venue and arts space Northern Quarter first opened doors during December 2017. It has since become an essential part of Huddersfield nightlife, featuring major names and local acts. Expect everything from acoustic open mic nights to reggae vinyl dance nights and mosh pit madness.

Leeds alt-funk five-piece Flat Moon play Northern Quarter on Friday 2nd February, as will Hull based hip hop great Chiedu Oraka who is supported by Ducklin Curls on Saturday 3rd February.

The Parish

Music is their religion

The Parish is an exciting bar and restaurant found in Huddersfield. Treasured by locals, the key venue was saved by a Crowdfunder campaign when the pandemic threatened to close doors forever. Patrons raised a staggering £45,000, as reported by Kerrang!, which is almost double the amount asked for and a real testament to the venue's popularity.

IVW shows at The Parish include accomplished indie folk songwriter Pictish Trail (Sunday 4th February) and blues rockers These Wicked Rivers (Sunday 4th February) who are promoting their new album Force Of Nature.
