Led by songwriter and founding member Chrissie Hynde, British-American rock band The Pretenders have been a major presence in the charts on both sides of the Atlantic since the late 70s. Their career has seen them grow from punk rock/new wave upstarts to become one of the world’s biggest groups, with Hynde and co. entering the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.

The veteran band have just released their twelfth studio album Relentless which they take on the road playing headline dates during February and March 2024 including two nights at The London Palladium. CLICK HERE to book your tickets with Gigantic!

To celebrate the upcoming tour, we take a look at the biggest hits, classic tracks and anthems from The Pretenders. Keep scrolling to check out their top tunes!

"Brass in Pocket"

Appearing on their Platinum-selling eponymously titled No. 1 debut album which dropped in 1979, "Brass in Pocket" is the only single by The Pretenders to top the charts so far. A huge success for a band that formed just over a year prior to release, it’s a sultry and sassy performance from Hynde asserting her confidence right from the very start of her career.

"Back on the Chain Gang"

Learning to Crawl was a massive record for The Pretenders marking both a massive creative and commercial leap for the band when it was released in 1983, but was written and recorded following the tragic death of former bassist Pete Farndon.

"Back on the Chain Gang" is a song about strained relations. It was initially written about the tumultuous relationship between Hynde and The Kink’s Ray Davies, but it took on greater resonance following the tragic events.

"2000 Miles"

"2000 Miles" also appeared on the seminal Learning To Crawl LP. A classic Christmas pop song with all combing the perfect ingredients of love and longing during a seasonally snowy Yuletide – the festive anthem is one of The Pretenders’ greatest hits reaching Platinum certification.

"I'll Stand by You"

"I'll Stand by You" is an empowering anthem of love and solidarity found on the 1994 album Last of the Independents.

A Top 10 track for Chrissie and the band, "I'll Stand by You" was famously covered by Girls Aloud who topped the charts with their version in 2004. It was also released as a charity single by American Idol winner Carrie Underwood.

"I Think About You Daily"

This year saw the release of the Relentless album which culminates with "I Think About You Daily" – a six-and-a-half-minute mournful ballad reflecting on loss and regret. A mature masterpiece, the epic emotional journey is aided by string arrangements composed by Radiohead’s Johnny Greenwood.
