Working Men's ClubFear Fear

What do you do when you explode out of nowhere, become the coolest band ever and release a record so fucking cool, critics and fans love it alike? Do it all again! Now teenager wunderkind Syd Minsky-Sargeant has just tuned twenty and returned with eagerly awaited second Working Men's Club album Fear Fear and it’s every bit as banging as we hoped it would be.

Inevitably, a coming-of-age album will always come with a certain amount of baggage, as Syd comes to terms with everything from mundanity to his own mortality. But that’s not to say this record is any less ravey as the Todmorden tearaway has gone big on the beats.

The first album was mostly a personal documentation lyrically, this is a blur between personal and a third-person perspective of what was going on. Fear Fear documents the last two years. Yes, there is bleakness – but there is also hope and empathy. I like the contrast of it being happy, uplifting music and really dark lyrics. It’s not a minimal record, certainly compared to the first one. That’s because there’s been a lot more going on that needed to be said.

InterpolThe Other Side Of Make Believe

Lesser bands would feel the fatigue seven albums in; but for New York’s coolest post punk revivalists Interpol it feels like they’re just getting started. Never shy at tackling emotional weight or darker subject matters with a wry humour; latest LP The Other Side Of Make Believe keeps the intensity but adds a great element of levity to both their sharp style and lyrics written in direct response to recent world events.

The nobility of the human spirit is to recover and rebound. Yeah, I could focus on how fucked everything is, but I feel now is the time when being hopeful is necessary, and a still-believable emotion within what makes Interpol Interpol.” – Paul Banks
