Council estate kid Andrew Cushin is the authentic sound of the North. The local lad from Newcastle has risen through the ranks of nearby venues, thanks to his modern twist on timeless British guitar-led songwriting. First single “It’s Gonna Get Better” revealed a fresh talent with an old soul and reached out to find listeners far and wide.
It was this raw honesty that bent the ear of Oasis legend Noel Gallagher who eagerly both performed and produced touching song “Where Has My Family Gone”, lending the young starlet the audience and the acknowledgement he deserves.
Going from strength to strength, the icon-in-making has made prominent festival appearances including a sensational set at 110 Above and packs out venues wherever he plays.
In April, Cushin drops his debut EP You Don’t Belong, which features two singles including a title track which has huge anthem written all over it. Last week saw the release of his latest release; “Catch Me If You Can”. The stomping song reveals a singer on the run, chased by everyday problems whilst unable to escape their internal conflicts.
“The lyrics are written more as a metaphor. I believe the song is about running away from something. The lines ‘here comes the girl with bad intentions’ and ‘she’ll come for me and then she’ll come for you’ could be about anxiety, depression or addiction. That’s what I like about ‘Catch Me If You Can’, the lyrics can be perceived in many different ways.”
